As creatives and visionaries, we can often see systems as complicated and one more thing to manage. We strive for freedom and flexibility in our work, and systems can feel like they’re constraining us and putting us in a box.
However, I want to challenge this notion. Systems, when implemented properly (and in a SIMPLE way), can actually give you true freedom. By having a structure in place, you’re able to work more efficiently and with greater ease. You don’t have to waste time figuring out what to do next or how to do it – the process is already laid out for you.
Think of it this way: a chef may see a recipe as a constraint, but in reality, it’s a guide that allows them to create a delicious meal without having to think too hard about the process. The same is true for systems – they guide you through the process, freeing up mental space for you to focus on the creativity and innovation that truly sets you apart.
Think about recipes in business – The workflow to create a blog post is a recipe to follow, the workflow to produce a podcast is a recipe to follow, the workflow for filing away things into email or google drive is a recipe and so on!
So, next time you’re tempted to see systems as just another thing to manage, remember that they’re actually a tool that can help you achieve greater freedom and flexibility in your work.
